SUBSCRIPTION SITES

Although you can access a wealth of information on free-to-use web sites, it is likely that at some point you will feel it is worth subscribing to one or more of the pay-to-use sites which hold highly useful information on English and Welsh ancestors not freely available online - the following is a summary of information provided on three subscription sites that we can recommend - two of these (Ancestry and FindMyPast) offer 14 day free trials which we would recommend you take advantage of in the first instance - if the site meets your needs then we would recommend you opt for a half-yearly or yearly contract which work out quite a bit cheaper per month

  • ancestry - in spite of its heavy American style marketing, this site does in fact offer excellent value for money - it is strong on the basics (GRO register of births, marriages and deaths, census records) plus it now holds the complete set of UK telephone directories from 1880 to 1984 for online searching and viewing - there are three grades of membership - the cheapest (Essentials) provides access to post 1837 information - the next grade up (Premium) additionally provides access to pre 1837 parish and probate records - the most expensive (Worldwide) provides further access to a host of records on migration of ancestors to America and Australia - we recommend that before committing yourself you try this subscription site out on a 14 day free trial to get first hand experience of whether or not it is worth subscribing to in your particular case

  • findmypast.co.uk - this subscription site has significantly extended its content since its initial launch and is now a strong all-round competitor to ancestry.co.uk - like ancestry.co.uk it is strong on the basics and is currently the only site offering fully searchable access to the complete 1911 census - the site is efficiently structured with powerful indexes that operate on multiple data sources - since February 2011 it has provided online access to over 9 million records made available to it by the Society of Genealogists - we recommend that before committing yourself you try this subscription site out on a 14 day free trial to get first hand experience of whether or not it is worth subscribing to in your particular case

  • the genealogist - an easy-to-use site with its SmartSearch tool, this site provides online access to a growing number of parish registers in addition to census records and the complete GRO register of births, marriages and deaths
